Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were operating without a cath lab service on site. Patients who required angiography or angioplasty had to attend the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester. The Trust carry out their own implantable pacemakers but complex devices also had to go to Glenfield.
The Trust wanted to provide their own cardiac catheterisation service for the local population rather than having to send their patients to a tertiary hospital. A new unit would have to integrate into the existing design and layout of the hospital and ideally have 2 separate buildings – a Cardiac Cath Lab and a Chest Pain unit sitting within the cardiac ward to provide new facilities for outpatient cardiac investigations and then invasive diagnostic and treatment procedures in close proximity.
The 2 new purpose built facilities provide diagnosis and treatment for:
Arrhythmia, Heart failure, Hypertension, Ischaemic heart disease, Valve disorders
The Trust provides:
Appointment booking and management of procedures for over 125 patients each month, Extensive staff training in new techniques and equipment to support delivery of an outstanding service
Pre-assessment clinics, Nurses, State-of-the-art equipment, Space for other investigative procedures such as Cardioversion ad Transesophageal Echocardiogram services
The 2 new units deliver - Short waiting times for all procedures of 2-3 weeks Appointments within 7-14 days Provision of extra capacity for future units to include treatment of coronary artery disease through PCI and emergency on call service
We have been overwhelmed by the response to the development of this unit. InHealth has been invaluable with their professional input.
