Diabetic Eye Screening

An NHS Screening Service

Information for NHS professionals

Our fully managed diabetic eye screening services include a friendly Bookings team responsible for appointment invitations and answering any queries; retinal screening and grading carried out by highly trained and accredited professional staff using our very own screening and surveillance software, SpectraTM. Our automated referral for surveillance means that following screening people may be referred to one of over 57 Hospital Eye Services (HES) overseen by our experienced Failsafe Teams.

Our services are in full compliance with the national standards and we have a strong track record of increasing and maintaining high appointment attendance rates (87%) and patient satisfaction rates (96%) on average across all our areas.

A key factor in increasing uptake rates and patient satisfaction is accessibility, which is achieved through making sure each screening clinic location has good public transport links, easy parking, and clear signage.

Stakeholder engagement is also a priority and there are positions in all our programmes specifically tasked with identifying and engaging with local groups and communities who face health inequalities.

All the national NHS leaflets related to diabetic eye screening are available on the GOV.UK website (the majority are available in multiple languages, and the ‘Description of Diabetic Eye Screening’ leaflet has an easy read version).
