Cornish residents are now benefiting from faster access to vital NHS tests and scans following the opening of the new Camborne and Redruth Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) by Minister of State for Health Karin Smyth MP.
The state-of-the-art facility is now fully operational, adjacent to Camborne Redruth Community Hospital.
The centre, part of a national programme to bring diagnostic services closer to communities, is reducing the need for patients to travel long distances to hospital sites.
Patients can receive faster diagnoses and more timely treatment thanks to X-rays, MRI and CT scans, blood tests, ECGs, respiratory checks and endoscopy services being offered under one roof.
The Camborne and Redruth CDC is a partnership between NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board and InHealth, the UK’s largest specialist provider of diagnostic and healthcare solutions.
InHealth is already delivering MRI, CT and endoscopy services from state-of-the-art mobile units at CDCs in Bodmin and Penzance. Many thousands of patients are expected to benefit from the services now being delivered at the permanent Redruth site.
Minister of State for Health Karin Smyth MP said: “I am really pleased to be here to see this fantastic centre in Redruth. This is exactly what we want to do as part of our ten-year health plan. We’ve specifically talked about the needs of rural and coastal communities and bringing care closer to you the patients and to the public.
“We know that the health service has got a long way to go to get back to those standards we all expect but centres like this, seeing people more quickly, more conveniently, are a key part of that”
Susan Bracefield, Acting Chief Executive for NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board, said: “We are delighted to be expanding our community-based NHS services for local people with another new community diagnostic centre (CDC) for Cornwall providing vital care closer to home. This is part of our continued investment in delivering on the NHS 10-year plan to shift more care from hospitals into communities, something we know local people really want.
“Last year, more than 96,000 tests such as MRI scans, blood tests and ultrasounds were carried out at our CDCs in Bodmin and Penzance.
“This new centre at Redruth means even more patients can benefit from faster diagnoses, shorter waiting times and improved access to treatment.”
Debbie Richards, Chief Executive of Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust said: “I am delighted to see this facility delivering more care on the doorstep for patients in Camborne, Pool, Redruth and the west Cornwall area. Alongside our state-of-the-art Rosewarne Stroke Rehabilitation Unit, it is really bringing community hospital sites like Camborne Redruth into the 21st century.
“The diagnostic facilities available here are on a par with those the Trust offers at Bodmin Community Hospital. It is another real example of how Cornwall and the Trust are delivering more care closer to home, as outlined in the 10-Year Health Plan.”
Juliet Ferris, Place Director for West Cornwall’s Integrated Neighbourhood Team, said: “This facility works hand-in-hand with our Integrated Neighbourhood Teams and local services, helping doctors, nurses, and community health professionals coordinate care around each patient. It’s a great example of how we’re joining up services in the community so people can get the right care, in the right place, at the right time and supports a stronger, more connected local health system.”
Geoff Searle, Chief Executive, InHealth, said: “This is an exciting milestone in the South West CDC programme, and we’re proud to be working in partnership with NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Integrated Care Board to bring this new centre into operation.
“Expanding this model of healthcare in the South West brings real benefits to local patients, improving health outcomes through greater access, capacity and choice.
“InHealth has been partnering with the NHS for more than 30 years, operating over 20 community diagnostic centres across England, including 4 already in the South West, and we’re pleased to continue expanding this model of care.”
Richard Mackay, managing director, South, for NHS Property Services said: “We are delighted to have helped deliver this Community Diagnostic Centre. As the landowners, we have worked closely with NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly ICB, West Cornwall’s Integrated Neighbourhood Team and InHealth to bring this new Centre to fruition and provide services closer to home for local people who need tests for serious conditions.
“NHS Property Services is focussed on providing more preventative services and enabling the shift from hospital to neighbourhood health services to ensure the Government’s key health priorities within the 10-year plan are met.”
For local healthcare services, CDCs ease pressure on hospital departments, allowing clinicians to focus on urgent care while routine diagnostic tests are carried out in a convenient, community-based setting.
This not only improves patient experience but also supports more efficient use of NHS resources, helping to meet growing demand without compromising quality.
The hospital site benefits from strong public transport links, and an additional 22 new parking bays have been provided to ensure easy and convenient access for patients and visitors.
